[REVIEW] Pizza Express Gluten Free Pizzas

If someone had told me when I was first diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in 2007 that I’d be able to get gluten free pizza from many established restaurants I’d have told them to get on their bike!

But now, we can literally order gluten free pizzas pretty much anywhere now and one of those places is the amazing Pizza Express!

PIZZA EXPRESS LOGO Before my diagnosis, I loved going to Pizza Express! I loved their thin, crispy pizza bases and their unique pizza toppings which is no surprise that I was a little deflated when I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, knowing that I would no longer be able to enjoy their pizzas.

However all this changed when Pizza Express made it available for us Coeliacs and Gluten/Wheat Intolerants to enjoy their pizza again – by bringing out their own gluten free pizza bases! Now I go as much as I can!

My favourite pizza base is their gluten free Romana pizza base – a thinner, crisper base inspired from Rome –  with the Padana toppings (goats cheese, mozzarella, tomatoes, caramelised onion, red onion, spinach and garlic oil) Trust me, it’s absolutely delicious and because of the spinach and goats cheese, it seems somewhat healthier then your usual pizza topping! Alternatively, if the Romana Pizza Base isn’t your thing, their Classic and Piccolo pizza bases can be made gluten free too!

The pizza arrives uncut – giving you the confidence knowing that your pizza hasn’t been cut with the same pizza cutter used to cut a wheat/gluten base.

If you don’t fancy trying their Pizzas and want to try something different, Pizza Express also offer gluten free pasta dishes!

My only complaint (and this is such a minor complaint) is that I wish Pizza Express had a wider selection of starters. Usually I opt for their Buffalo Mozzarella and Tomato Salad (which I may add – is amazing!) but sometimes I want their famous Pizza Express Dough Balls! However, you never know! Maybe one day Pizza Express will surprise us!

But if Buffalo Mozzarella and Tomato Salad isn’t quite your thing, they are also offering other gluten free starters such as their Melanzanine – layered marinated Italian aubergine, passata, mozzarella, basil and Gran Milano cheese – Or their Risotto Fresco

ALSO – For Coeliac Awareness Week 2015 (May 11th – 17th) Pizza Express are offering 2 Gluten Free courses for £11.95. Simply download this [VOUCHER]  (courtesy of Coeliac UK ) and with your Coeliac Membership, present it to your waiter before booking. (Terms and Conditions apply)

Dietary Specials Bontà d’Italia Pizza Review

After my last blog about Dominos Pizza not doing gluten free bases in the UK, but they do in other countries [pfft, I know right!] it was obvious us gluten free peeps missed and loved our pizzas! Even though we’re lucky that there’s places out there that do gluten free pizzas [see here for list] sometimes all you want is to stay in, get your comfy glad rags on, watch a movie, hang out with friends and have some pizza!

All right you could make your own, either using one of Dietary Specials pizza bases or go back to basics using my easy, peasy gluten free pizza dough recipe [which you can also use to make dough balls!], but there’s times when all you want is it already pre made and all you gotta do is shove it in the oven and bingo – you’ve got yourself a gluten free pizza!

Now this is where Dietary Specials come in…

You see, some of you may already know that Dietary Specials do a gluten free pizza called Bontà d’Italia. It’s a thin, crispy margherita pizza with an Italian, stone baked base.

I knew when I bought it that is was going to be money well spent as Dietary Specials do some amazing, great tasting  products, such as their short crust pastry [which I made gluten free crumble topped mince pies and gluten free cheese and onion pasties] and the greatest gluten free Yorkshire puddings [review here] that taste just like the real thing, that you find yourself triple checking that they’re actually gluten free! So you can now get a little understanding why I was pretty excited to eat this pizza!

The Dietary Specials Bontà d’Italia pizza is up there with the greatest gluten free products around! I mean it, it’s absolutely delicious that even my friends who don’t have to eat gluten free like it too! Like their Yorkshire puddings, it’s hard to believe that it’s gluten free and you do find yourself checking the packaging to make sure that it’s gluten and wheat free!

So it’s because of this that I give this pizza two big thumbs up and highly recommend it to other gluten free peeps! What’s more, it’s also suitable for vegetarians! I just hope they continue making other pizzas like the Bontà d’Italia pizza but with other toppings, so we have more choice. But for now, I’m super happy to have the margherita one!

Dominos Gluten Free Pizza -Just Not In The UK

There was plenty of talk yesterday in the land of Twitter about Dominos pizza doing gluten free pizza bases!

It all started when Mike tweeted me a menu from Dominos Pizza in Australia and New Zealand, and there lurking at the bottom left hand side was an option for a gluten free dominos pizza! {click here for the menu}  However,Dominos in the UK doesn’t have this option which is a reason why us coeliacs haven’t let a dominos pizza pass our lips for a long time!

Nobody could understand why Dominos in the UK wouldn’t do gluten free pizzas. So, sicking together and creating a little twitter army, we bagan to spread the word by retweeting a tweet which was made by one of my followers; Martin Saunders.

So the retweets prompted Dominos UK to respond and send the following tweet:

Martin even offered to find a supplier for them but he was asked to write a letter to the head office. Even Gluten Free Bistro, a company that makes tasty gluten free treats, offered to become their supplier.

So fingers crossed ladies and G’s, as there’s still a chance we could have dominos pizza again like our Aussie friends. Let’s hope they find a supplier quickly and keep on looking!

However, don’t despair as we still have some fabulous gluten free pizza places out here in the UK that we can still enjoy. Thanks to all this talk about pizza on twitterville meant some of us was tweeting their favourite restaurants or take outs that do gluten free pizzas:

Mammas American Pizza Co – Edinburgh

Red Tomato Pizza and Pasta Takeaway – Doncaster

Credo Pizza – Dublin

Bake At Home Pizza Company – Fulham

Dough Pizza Kitchen – Manchester

Hell Pizza – Ireland and London

Atomic Pizza – Oxford

Bruschetta – Kingston

Da Gianni – Hull [with 24 hours notice]

Bella Italia – Nationwide

Thanks so much to those who tweeted me about these fabulous restaurants and take outs, if you know of any more I would love for you to leave a little comment below and I’ll get it added to the list!

Also, if you’re wondering where else cater for us coeliacs [and not just gluten free pasta and pizza], there’s a list of gluten free restaurants I’ve created. Although I’ve based my list on places in Manchester, a lot of the restaurants mentioned are nationwide 🙂

But if pre-made/frozen pizza is your thing, then check out Dietary Specials Bontà d’Italia Pizza! It’s by far, the greatest frozen pizza I’ve ever tasted! It’s hard to believe its gluten free and when my friends have tried a slice (when I’ve felt generous!) they’ve all be surprised at how nice it is and doesn’t taste like it should be gluten free! I’ll be writing up a more indepth review soon but do try and look out for it as I highly recommend it!
