I feel pretty excited and chuffed to announce that our honorary ‘uncle’ gluten freer, health writer and the one who always fights our coeliac corner, Alex Gazzola book: ‘Coeliac Disease: What you need to know, has been short-listed for the prestigious Guild of Health Writers Award 2012 for ‘Best Health Book’!
It’s great news for Alex as he’s given us fabulous coeliacs [and myself] tremendous help in understanding coeliac disease and all its perils through his amazing blog Food Allergy and Intolerance Ink. It’s honestly the one place I always go [or refer people to] whenever I feel confused about issues such as the new gluten free labelling laws, the issues surrounding Walkers crisps no longer being suitable for coeliacs and to just get involved with all the debates on his blog posts! He was also behind the ‘Gluten Free Tweet Up’, which allowed us coeliacs and gluten freers on twitter the opportunity to discuss issues concerning us and getting together by using the hash tag #gftweetup!
The book is a fact-packed guide to key aspects of coeliac disease, covering testing, diagnosis, new labelling regulations, diet and nutrition, future therapies, the psychological aspects of the condition, and much more. Nutritionist and coeliac Ian Marber, formerly of The Food Doctor, called the book “a must-have for sufferers, medics, caterers and restaurant staff”. Plus, it also features a foreword from Coeliac UK Health Ambassador, Dr Chris Steele!
It is up against books about psychology, cancer, IVF and dementia, and the winner will be announced at a gala reception on the 29thMarch 2012 at the Royal Society of Medicine, London. So I will be crossing my eyes, fingers and toes for Alex!
The book is published by Sheldon Press and is available on Amazon and all good bookshops for £7.99. [An ebook for Kindle will be available in Spring].
